Dr. Baker is curator of the Gordon Center for Industrial History of Texas, in Thurber, Texas. Thurber is about 75 miles west of Fort Worth, and was once a boomtown for coal mining. Nowadays, it is not much more than a coffee-shop, old hotel and museum, but it has a rich history. Last Thursday, at the Dallas Public Library, Dr. Baker gave a talk on historic industrial sites all over Texas. His book is worth buying: Building the Lone Star, An Illustrated Guide to Historic Sites in Texas.
