“How old do you think I am?” asked Gerardo, who is originally from Michoacan in Mexico. I said, oh, 50? He said, “I am 62. I do not drink or smoke. I work seven days a week, almost every day of the year, rain or shine. Each day I walk 150 blocks or more.” He sells ice-cream on the streets of Dallas, Texas, and has been in the United States since 1972. He is married (20 years) and has 10 children (5 boys / 5 girls). One son is a policeman, another is a bartender, another works with steam cleaning, another is in Iraq… Gerardo didn’t have time to tell me about all his kids– he is too busy working.
