“This has been my hobby for 30 years,” Jess told me, as we stood in an empty, muddy lot in Waxahachie, Texas. “I’m not getting rich doing this, but sometimes it pays for my trips.” Jess’s hunting partners are his brother Harold and their friend Kent. Each was equipped with a metal detector, headphones and a shovel. Most of the time they find mundane things– coins, jewelry, old cosmetic cases, buttons, etc. Jess’s most memorable find? On a beach in Costa Rica, he found a small bag of cocaine. He said, “I emptied it onto the grass, then kicked sand over it. And then I washed my hands.” Minutes later, two fellows came by looking for something along the spot where Jess found the bag.
