Last night was the fifth night of the eight nights of Chanukah. I happened upon a celebration in a park in Arlington, Texas. Rabbi Levi Gurevitch directed the proceedings. There was singing, a contest of guessing how many dreidel are in a box, and the lighting and blessing of the menorah.
A menorah has nine candles. Eight candles for the eight days of Chanukah, and one candle (shamash) to light the others. Last evening, there were only the shamash plus five candles, this being the fifth day. Everyone attending held a candle to symbolize the importance of light in darkness.
