Yesterday, February 2, in addition to freezing temps, folks in Dallas and Fort Worth went through rolling blackouts. The idea was that each sector in the power grid would be blacked-out for 15 minutes, to conserve energy. The reality was that some folks (including myself) lost power for up to 18 hours. No lights and no heat. With 13 degrees outside. I was mighty uncomfortable last night, but made by it bundling up with heavy clothes and comforters. This evening (Thursday, February 3) the power is back on.
My discomfort was mild compared to many, and I came away with a greater appreciation for living with 21st century comforts. Imagine the life of ancient Native Americans who lived here for centuries, and 19th century frontier pioneers who settled here with little more than a tent to shield them from the wind. Someone once asked me why I do not buy lotto tickets. That’s easy– I figure that I already won some of the biggest lotteries in life.
Right now, 8:20 p.m., the temp is 21 F (-6.1 C). This is a bit warmer than it was this time yesterday. There is a 40% chance of snow tomorrow. We’ll see!
