On to Arkansas…

One afternoon, on my way back to Houston, I saw this sight just south of Carthage, Texas.  Mind you, this was 1995, and even in those bygone days, before i-Phone, i-Pod, i-Pad and any other i-ness you can think of– even back then, Texas had fossil-fueled vehicles, rural electrification and, most places, indoor plumbing.  So the sight of a mule-drawn covered wagon along the highway was most unusual.   The wagon had stopped for a few minutes and the mule-driver was standing on the side of the road, talking to curious onlookers, when I walked over…

“We’re having a prayer meeting,” said the mule-driver, with a wink and grin.  I said amen and asked what is the occasion?  Mule-driver said that they were heading to Arkansas.  His buddy on horseback asked if I had ever seen “Lonesome Dove”.  I sort of nodded, because I hadn’t really seen it (still haven’t), at least not more than a scene or two.  He went on, “Well, we’re taking Gus back home.”   Mule-driver laughed and climbed onto his wagon.  The wagon had a bumper-sticker “Take Back Texas” and another one about a trail drive.  “Get outta here!” yelled the driver to his animals, and off they rolled…
