Most of Des Moines is in Polk county, but a bit of the city is also in Warren County.  “Des Moines” means “of the monks.”  One theory says that Moingona Indians, not monks, was the original inspiration for the name, but gradually the name became “moines” (monks) because it was easier to spell. 

Actress Cloris Leachman was born in Des Moines in 1926.  And Ronald Reagan worked as a disc-jockey in this city.
