I accidentally stepped on this fellow at Glen Rose State Park in Texas. I don’t think I did any damage to him– I caught myself before landing with my full weight. He was deeply unhappy with me, and he turned on me and gave me a severe tongue lashing (er… hissing). I felt bad for the poor fellow. He is just an ordinary rat snake. Perfectly harmless, unless you happen to be a rodent. Wasn’t his fault, that I put my big foot on him. He clearly thought I should have watched my step. I apologized, but, really, what can you say to a snake?
