Mermaid.

It is not what you expect to find in conservative, rural, small-town Iowa.  But find it you do.  A mermaid, a replica of the famouse statue in Copenhagen, is the symbol of Kimballton, Iowa.  Kimballton, in Audubon county, is one of the two “Danish Villages”– so named because a large number of residents are of Danish descent.

I asked the postmaster if anyone speaks negatively about the nude young lady.  The postmaster (a young lady, herself), said, “One time we submitted a picture of the mermaid to the U.S. Postal Service for use on an Iowa stamp.”

“What did they say?” I asked.

“No.”

Chris.

When I met Chris in Elk Horn, Iowa, he was painting a mural depicting all the uniforms of American soldiers from the Revolutionary War to today.  Chris has a strong interest in history.  He has lived in Texas, Oklahoma and now in Iowa.

Elk Horn is in Shelby County, Iowa.  Population 650 folks.  It is one of the two Iowa “Danish Villages”– so named because many of their residents are of Danish descent.  The other Danish Village is Kimballton, just a few miles north of Elk Horn.
