How it is.

Today, January 20, 2017, Donald Trump became the 45th president of the United States. Many Americans are angry. I did not vote for him. I do not like him. I wish someone else were president.

Even so, I am an American, and, yes, Donald Trump is my president. This is still my country.

I readily and happily acknowledge that in other open and free countries, the transfer of power is peaceful. However, If you will pardon a moment of national pride, I do believe that these United States do it better than most.

I wish the best for our new president, for all Americans, and for the world.

Dia de Muertos/Noche de Calaveras.

Despite the colorful name and festive nature of the holiday, Dia de Muertos has a more serious purpose– focusing on family and friends who pray for and remember those who have died. There are public altars honoring the dead, and that evening during Noche de Calaveras there is music, food, dancing, and sugar skulls (calaveras). Folks come out dressed in their finest bona-fide bones. In Dallas, Texas, Dia/Noche take place at the Latino Cultural Center.
